Jobless

It amuses me how female leads in hindi movies almost never have boring desk jobs. If they have jobs at all, that is.

They always have some quirky or fun occupation like school teacher or artist. Something that involves meeting new people or dealing with kids.

No good deed goes unpunished.

So that you can see how lively, fresh-faced, compassionate and fun-loving she is.

Of course!

Remember Asin in Ghajini? What is she? A struggling actress. But that doesn't stop her from having a quirky (if tiny) apartment, and helping disabled kids swing across a cattle stop using a gate (!!), as Amir Khan looks on enchanted.

Or say that woman who played Kiran in Mohabbatein. What exactly is her job? Does she volunteer at the local hospital? She brings a bunch of balloons for the kids, so I’m guessing she volunteers at the paediatric department, which doesn't explain why she ends up bandaging Jimmy Shergill’s hand after he creepily cuts himself on purpose to be close to her! Even if she volunteers in general, why does she do the bandaging when the hospital is teeming with actual medical professional!?

Notice Mr. Mooney Eyes.

Anyway, it doesn't matter, because nobody cares. Her job just has to demonstrate how awesome she is so that Jimmy can make moony eyes at her and fall in lou. Mission accomplished!

The hero, however, may well be an investment banker or entrepreneur. So that he has tons of money to lavish on her when they finally meet and fall in love. But he has also sort of lost himself in being a workaholic or some such.

So she rescues him from his bleak life. He learns to smile again, let loose, enjoy himself, live again… stand atop a mountain and scream “I’m aliiiive!!.”

And she can then proceed to comfortably settle into the life of luxury that his years of toil and being a workaholic have yielded.

Ah. Perfection.
